Buying a Quality Headache Rack – What to Look For
Though certainly not the most expensive modification you’ll ever make to your truck – or even the most “flashy” modification – the investment in quality headache racks can completely transform your truck almost in the blink of an eye.
Designed and developed from the ground up to not only keep your cab cooler (and eliminate all of those hot headaches you’ve been getting) but also to protect your rear windshield from damage at the same time, headache racks are very often custom pieces of fabricated metal that completely change the way you use your truck forever.
That being said, there are a couple of very specific things you should be looking for in quality headache racks before you make your investment. Because of their “custom” nature, there are all kinds of manufacturers producing these pieces of equipment, and you’ll need to know who to invest in, who to stay away from, and who will deliver you the very best product in the long run.
Let’s dive right in!
First and foremost, make sure that the manufacturer has produced headache racks for your truck make and model
Believe it or not, there are some manufacturers of headache racks pumping out custom jobs on a regular basis that will be more than happy to tell you that will produce a headache rack for your truck – without ever having done it for that make and model before.
This might not be an issue if you’re dealing with a truly elite level metal fabricator and someone who has been making headache racks for years and years, but you still probably don’t want to be someone’s “test dummy”. No, you’ll probably want to work with a company or metal fabricator that has made at least a handful of headache racks for your specific vehicle in the past – if only to see their work upfront before you commission your own equipment.
Investigate the quality of material as well as construction
Too often we can get sucked into the marketing and advertising behind some of the quality materials used in the production of headache racks, forgetting that these are not exactly the kinds of equipment that are mass-produced on a grand scale. Very often there are (relatively) small metal fabrication shops pumping these headache racks out, and they are as close to custom pieces as you’re going to find. This means that construction materials and construction methods need to be checked for quality across the board, and you’ll want to (at the very least) ask for a handful of photographs – and maybe even some video – that documents the different stages there headache racks go through to completion.
Finally, investigate as many reviews as you can before purchasing
Last but not least, you’ll want to try and find any reviews about the specific headache racks you’re looking for before you make the purchase. This may not always be possible (thanks to that custom nature of these products), but if you’re working with a company that has already established some reputation and history in the industry it should be no trouble whatsoever. Speak to your friends, bodies, and fellow truck drivers for their recommendations – but make sure that you’re doing your own research as well.
