Many drivers enjoy the convenience of a full-size pickup truck for everyday driving as well as for heavy lifting and hauling. The all-new redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado offers a smooth ride combined with the toughness and power to satisfy any driver’s needs.

The new 1500 is beautifully designed and is an attention-grabbing pickup. It offers 18-inch polished aluminum wheels to complete its smooth exterior design. The new Chevy incorporates the well-known Bowtie badge symbol with a stylish grille and chrome accents. The new Silverado is now 0.4 inches wider than previous models and offers a more planted look. The wheel arches are squared and provide an innovative design when paired with the more angular exterior. The doors are also inset which helps the pickup look more modern. Considering the older models were not as round, the 2014 model offers a fresh take on the pickup.

Performance and Body Styles

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a full-size pickup available in several cargo-bed/cab configurations. There are also two-and four-wheel drive models available. The standard model starts at $24,585 and is equipped with a fuel-efficient 5.3-liter V8 engine. The body styles offered include the regular cab, the extended (or double) cab, and the crew cab. The regular cab models are limited to the midlevel LT trims. However, the crew cabs and extended cabs are available in LS, LT, luxury LTZ and off-road Z71 trims. These models cost significantly more and are available with various upgraded features.

The two-wheel drive model estimates 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The four-wheel drive model estimates 18 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The 2014 Silverado also offers a tow capacity of up to 11,500 pounds. Currently, the 5.3-liter V8 engine produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque.

Safety

The new Silverado incorporates all of the standard safety features. The 2014 model includes traction/stability control, side curtain airbags, antilock disc brakes, and front/rear seat airbags. OnStar also comes standard on the 2014 model. There are several safety services offered that include stolen vehicle assistance, automatic crash notification, and roadside assistance. Other options offered include driver aides like forward collision alert and lane departure. There is also a rearview camera and front/rear park assist.

Design and Special Features

Chevy has included several improvements to the quality of the cabin. The materials and design are excellent compared to previous models. The 2014 model offers more bins and cubbies. The LTZ models also incorporate five USB ports to charge all personal devices. There is a MyLink system that uses an 8-inch touchscreen for music and phone controls. The MyLink system also uses simple and intuitive controls for navigational purposes. This Silverado eliminates the need for redundant buttons and knobs with an effective voice command interface.

For the most part, the cab has unchanged from previous models. However, there is a slight increase in the amount of rear legroom. The passengers in the front have also received an increase in their seat adjustment range.

The reverse-opening rear doors have been replaced with traditional forward-hinged doors. The new cabin includes enhanced body mounts for a smoother ride. These mounts also reduce vibration and road noise. This 1500 incorporates newly designed steps and handholds into the rear corners of the vehicle for effortless rear entry.

Driver Impressions

Overall, the ride and handling of the 2014 Silverado is noticeably more improved. The 1500 feels forceful yet sounds quiet. The smooth ride and reduced road noise will offer a piece of mind to any driver. This Chevy is well-balanced when turning and the steering is steady. When using the Silverado for off-road activities, there is far less bouncing and shaking on rocky trails.

The new V8 engine offers both power and performance. More importantly, driving the 1500 feels more refined. This is an indication that the engine is more polished. The 5.3-liter V8 offers solid thrust with seamless acceleration. The engine also incorporates a fuel-efficient cylinder deactivation system. This system efficiently switches between V8 and V4 modes effortlessly. The six-speed automatic transmission also offers smooth and timely shifting. Overall, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is a must have for any driver that requires the power to haul combined with smooth everyday driving.

The winter season causes headaches to many car drivers around the world. Driving in hazardous conditions is already hard enough, but poorly equipped vehicles also tend to get stuck in snow banks or in slippery patches. To avoid this frustration, many people living North – Canadians, for example – will look for vehicles that are bigger and can easily get them through the winter madness.

Today, we will have a look at a few vehicles that are designed especially to survive snow.

The big boys: Silverado, F-150 and Ram

A few years ago, in 2011, Car Gurus also made a study of the vehicles that were able to drive in harsh conditions. A few trucks were able to make the cut:  it was said that four-wheel drive trucks are very hard to beat in deep snow. The Chevrolet Silverado, the Ford F-150 and the Dodge Ram are the preferred ones thanks to their very high ground clearance, which allows plowing through the snow like a breeze.

The Chevrolet 2014 Silverado’s manufacturer suggested retail price is 25,580 USD. It goes down to 24,385 USD for the Dodge Ram 2014 and reaches 24 125 USD for the Ford F-150.

The Jeep Wrangler Polar, specially designed for winter

Jeep loves special edition vehicles. Each year, two or three exclusivities are released and produced in very small quantities. This winter, the manufacturer announced that its flagship Wrangler would be declined in a “Polar version”, which will be limited to 4 500 vehicles. It is expected to arrive on the market in November, so Jeep fans should get ready to jump on the opportunity because it’s going to sell quite fast.

The Wrangler Polar will feature a new black front grill, polished black alloy wheels and a few more aesthetic changes. Thanks to its heated seats, it should provide a great level of comfort to its users even at the lowest temperatures. The retail price of this one-time offer should start at 33,490 USD for the two-door model and 37,190 USD for the four-door model.

The Subaru Outback 2014

Subaru makes one of the best four-wheel drives in the industry: it was impossible not to talk about the Outback in this article. It is not as effective as a regular truck but it will cater to drivers with different needs. This SUV comes with a 2.5-liter, 173 HP four-cylinder engine or a stronger 3.6 liter, 256 HP and six-cylinder alternative. It is also possible to install heated front seats and heated mirrors, to avoid blind lane changes!

For the 2.5i automatic model, the manufacturer suggested retail price is 24 495 USD. For the 3.6R Limited Automatic, though, the MSRD is rather set at 32 095 USD.

A few good cars to consider

In conclusion, let’s have a look at a few sedans that are also reliable choices for the cold season. According to Forbes, the BMW 3 Series has a high ground clearance (for a sedan, of course) and has a lot of winter-specific options. The Subary Legacy, thanks to an AWD drive that is similar to its sister, is always a good choice. Finally, the Subary Impreza is a more compact alternative hat could be interesting for urban drivers.

A body kit is an assortment of external alterations to a vehicle. The kit can comprise side skirts, bumpers, paint jobs, side guards, roof scoops and spoilers. Modifying your 4×4 personalizes your vehicle. All the components complement one another but you can also mix parts from different car models. These kits are made of different materials including fiberglass, polyurethane and carbon fiber. The latter is very expensive and this makes fiberglass and polyurethane more suitable. Your 4×4 is exposed to hazards every time it is one the road therefore you need to know how to repair the body kit. The front and rear bumpers are modified in several 4×4 vehicles. Here are step-by-step instructions to help you repair your modified bumpers.

· Remove your modified bumper. Most of them are attached using rivets, screws or plastic pins. Examine it carefully to determine the exact location of the fasteners. Check the boot if you are removing the rear bumper. You may need some help to remove it because some of them tend to be heavy.

· Clean the bumpers to remove dirt and grease. Liquid soap will be very effective. If there is any grease left on the body kit, use a degreaser. It is important to remove all the grease to reveal the extent of the damage on the vehicle part.

· Use sandpaper to remove paint from the front part of the bumper. Use compressed air to blow off the sanded paint. Check for any holes on the bumper and if you identify some, drill holes on their edges to prevent them from spreading. Use the sandpaper to smoothen the backs of the holes.

· Use bonding adhesive on the back of the holes to seal them. Apply some adhesion promote before using the adhesive. The adhesion promoter should also be used at the front to seal the holes. It should be allowed to dry for about 10 minutes. Once all the holes are dry, use a body filler to fill them in and leave the bumper to dry for a few hours.

· Sand the body kit to get rid of any excess body filler and use an air compressor to remove the dust.

· If your body kit had a textured design, you need a texture spray. Use the spray generously on the bumper. Make sure the can is about 15” away from the bumper when you do this. It is important to move from one end to another to achieve consistency. Your motion should be fluid as you spray the bumper. Once you cover the entire surface, sand the kit and use the texture spray again.

· You need a body kit colour coat once you use the texture spray. This step will only apply if your kit was colored. Find a colour that complements your 4×4. Allow the colour coat to dry and then sand it. This step should be repeated about three times. It is important to note that you do not sand the bumper after the last colour coat. This will give your bumper an amazing glow.

Choosing the right accessories entails doing the following things;

Doing a product comparison.

Chevy Silverado Black Ops Edition

You just can’t beat a pickup truck, especially the new Chevy Silverado Black Ops Edition! This is one pickup truck you don’t want to pick a fight with, as it may very well run you off the road with just a tap.

The Chevrolet Design Manager said of the Chevy Silverado Black Ops Edition:

“It’s a survival kit on four wheels”

The Chevy Silverado Black Ops Edition come kitted out with gas masks, winch, body armour, and food and drink storage. I know I want this pickup truck in case the world ever ends or is attacked by zombies. This pickup truck has everything except for a gun rack or fitted missile launchers. I don’t know whether I am going all James Bond or Mission Impossible here, but if I am being attacked by zombies, these are two things I would want.

Chevrolet built the Black Ops Edition to show off just how good the Silverado model is. I have to say I think it worked as the model looks incredible! You can go and see the Chevy Silverado Black Ops Edition at the SEMA Aftermarket Parts Show in Las Vegas.

There are so many TV shows lately about the end of the world such as “Doomsday Preppers”, where families show just how they prepare if this event ever took place. I believe this is why Chevrolet decided to do the Black Ops Edition, to play on this craze that seems to be sweeping across our televisions.

I think Chevrolet done a good job creating a survival kit on fur wheels as I know if there was ever a viral attack then the first thing I would want is a gas mask and to head to somewhere recluse. With going somewhere recluse you would obviously also need a fuel can, water tank, and a food crate, which the Black Ops Edition also has. They really have thought of everything!

No wonder Dave Moss said it was a survival kit on 4 wheels!

As well all that, the Chevy Silverado Black Ops Edition also has luxury black leather interior with yellow piping to make your survival kit more than a survival kit, but rather a comfortable haven.

Australians live in the midst of the most gorgeous geography in the world. Although it’s not the trackless wastes it once was, there is still plenty of wilderness experience left out there for you and your family. Is there a better way to take in Australia’s abundant natural beauty than running a good track among the trees or outback? So take that holiday time you’ve been saving up and unwind along the route of a scenic adventure.

Landcruiser Mountain Park– Jimna, Queensland

This is a private wilderness park owned by a working cattle outfit about two hours northwest of Brisbane near Jimna. The park is specifically designed to accommodate off-roaders and bush campers on its 200-kilometre trail system. There are challenges for every expert, sections for beginners to build their confidence and something for every level of driver in between. There is plenty of variety in terrain and obstacle types scattered over the gullies and hills of the park and its creeks. The best thing about this place is its wide selection of grassy spots for laid-back creek side bush camping. Not only can you camp anywhere in the park while off-roading to your heart’s delight, there are also enthusiast gatherings and competition events frequently going on. You don’t have to give up entertainment just because you gave up city streets for a bit.

Fraser Northern Forests– Fraser Island, Queensland

Fraser Island, famous for white beaches and blue seas, has even more than that to offer with its gorgeous tracks through the Northern Forest. The old logging trails make for a spectacular trip through rugged terrain among the dense foliage. The island has a rich history and fantastic scenery, including the shipwreck of the SS Maheno, beached since 1935. There is an old commando-training base on the island to visit, also. One of the most recommended tracks through the island’s Northern Forests starts at Happy Valley on the central east coast of the island. This is a track for more experienced drivers, with deep ruts and lots of mud and roots along its 36-kilometre run through deep rain forest and a couple of different options for detours past lakes. The island is home to a great deal of wildlife, including dingoes roaming at large. Vehicle permits are required for access to Fraser Island, and four-wheel drive is required anywhere you go.

Flinders Range— South Australia

The Flinders is the largest mountain range in South Australia. Quorn, north of Port Augusta from the southern coast, is recommended as the most suitable launching pad for exploration into the Flinders Range. The Austral Hotel in Quorn has access to some private properties in the Flinders that have great four wheeling through some very rugged terrain and stunning scenery. The Arden Hills sheep station, just north of Quorn, has an abundant variety of off-road trails and camping opportunities. These trails can be intimidating for some folks and require a good set of skills, with water crossings and some heavy climbs along with ridge runs, amazing mountain views and some breath taking downhills. Further north is even more exploration, as the Flinders Range stretches for some 500 kilometres. Beyond Hawker, the old mining town of Blinman offers a glimpse into the history of the region. As you move north, the forests start to thin and you move into a more arid and rugged terrain. The tracks in the area are very challenging and will require some experience to get in and out.

Mount McCall Track– Tasmania

Mount McCall Track starts at the southern end of Lake Burbury, about 20 kilometres south of Queenstown. Starting at Darwin Dam, it runs for another 20 kilometres through Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park to Mount McCall. Along the way, there is Bird River, about 5 kilometres out of the way, with a camping and picnic area along with some good hiking out to a former town site. To continue past Bird River you will need to contact Parks and Wildlife in Queenstown to get the key and a permit to continue the track on to Mount McCall. After cresting McCall, the track turns down, dropping nearly a half-kilometre in elevation, ending at a campsite above the Franklin River. This track is one of the milder ones in this list, but requires the use of low-range gearing for the final descent towards the river. Once at the campsite, your family can access the river via the hiking trail down the side of the hill.

Mount Ginnini—Victoria

This route is a great day trip, starting about 40 kilometres west of Canberra at Brindabella National Park and continuing for another 40 kilometres or so into Namadgi National Park. Along the way, you will top several mountain ridges for spectacular, wide-open views of the mountain terrain and beautiful forests. The road is rocky and narrow, so practice reasonable care. The difficulty level is not extreme but experience will be rewarded on such a rough and winding road. Bendora Dam offers beautiful scenery and picnic spots. Follow Mount Franklin Road to the Bimberri Wilderness and the end of the trail. Prepare to be cut short by locked gates during the winter through this section. Near the end of the trail is a somewhat challenging, rocky terrain to the top of the hill, where there is a radio site and some commanding views of the national park. Overall, this track isn’t too advanced, but it is advisable to take some tools along because of the rocks. My advice is as follows; should you decided to go on this particular track, that as a must you should install the rock sliders on your 4×4 truck.

If you want to look after the environment you may have to think carefully next time you have to choose between conventional and synthetic lubricants.

Synthetic oils are best to use if you engine is going to running in high temperatures for a long time. It is also better than conventional because it has been formulated exactly for this purpose.

But other than these obvious benefits is it really worth it? Conventional oil is probably half the price of synthetic oil.

To be honest, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. So there are many things to take into consideration to discover which one is best for you.

If you choose conventional oil then there is a possibility are losing 6 gallons of oil a year as synthetic oil is known to last approximately 3 times longer. However, since synthetic oil is made from chemicals it is known to be harmful to the environment, whereas conventional oil is formulated from petrol which is similarly unkind to the environment.

So you still want to know which one is better. One thing we haven’t discussed yet is that a certain amount of used lubricants can be cleaned and reused. However, it does take quite a long time to clean used oils, so you still may not be any better off recycling your oil.

You should change you oil either at every 3,000 miles or every 3 months – whatever comes first. However, if you use synthetic you can generally go a little longer than this. So you may get away with changing the oil once every 4 months or every 4,000 miles.

Synthetic oil doesn’t evaporate as quickly as it used to as it is more stable. Chemists have been working extra hard to ensure that it is cleaner than before and thanks to modern technology, they are able to do so.

Modern synthetic oils use less petrol, yet still allow the engine to perform at the same level as it did before. This makes the engine more efficient and gives it allows it to go faster. Another advantage of synthetic lubricants is that they don’t cause as much conflict in the engine as they did before.

Certain brands of synthetic oil will allow you to drive up to 20,000 miles without changing the oil. However, this is dependent on the distance you drive as short journeys will not heat the oil enough for it to evaporate.

Ultimately, synthetic oil is considered the best lubricant. However, if you’re looking for a lower cost option you the synthetic blend engine oil. But they do not last as long as full synthetic oil.

Being caught up in a roadside emergency is something that no one really wants to be involved in, but unfortunately from time to time we often find ourselves in this situation – and sometimes we see the plight of someone else. Being stuck in a roadside emergency can be an absolute nightmare, and if you don’t have roadside assistance then you are often left relying on a kind passer-by to help you out of your predicament.

If you happen to be that kind passer-by then you may have the equipment and the ability to help someone out. So what is it that you actually need to be able to effectively help someone out in the event of a roadside emergency?

  • Rope
This can be incredibly useful if you are looking to help someone out of a field, embankment, or generally any other situation where they shouldn’t have ended up. A good sturdy rope will allow you to attach a part of your car to a part of their car and effectively tow them out. Of course, it’s important to ensure that your car has the power to do this effectively, or you could find that you are actually being pulled into trouble
  • Spare battery
A spare battery is a generally handy extra to carry around with you, and if you come across a car where the battery has gone flat then this can be absolutely ideal. Of course you need to make sure that the battery is compatible with the car to prevent any disasters from happening!
  • Jump leads
Jump leads are great when you need to jump start a car, and this allows you to use power from your car to jump start another car. Make sure that you connect your jump leads in the appropriate manner to prevent any problems later down the line – and in turn you’ll find this is a quick and easy way to get a car started.
  • Mobile phone
Ok, so this isn’t a part of the car, but it is something in your car that can be absolutely invaluable in this situation. If you can’t help out then calling someone who can is exactly what you need to do. Get out your mobile and call roadside assistance, they may have to pay for it, but it’s a great alternative to being stuck on the side of the road, and they will generally have all the tools needed to help out!

Every vehicle’s heart is its fuel and exhaust system, and fuel pumps are the most important components of this system. There are various types of fuel pumps used in various applications. Because these pumps supply fuel to various parts of the engine, it might stop working if some of these pumps stop performing. Let’s take a look at some types of fuel pumps used in various applications.

Roller vane pumps

Roller vane pumps consist of a rotor fitted with metal rollers. These rollers create a vacuum which pulls the fuel into the pump. Once the fuel enters the pump, the rollers force the fuel out of the pump chamber with extreme pressure. These types of pumps are popularly used in applications which involve multiport fuel injection. No other type of pump can handle fuel contaminants as much as Roller vane pumps. They are also used in transferring non-abrasive liquids and aromatic solvents.

Turbine pumps

Turbine pumps consist of a turbine blade which operates at a high speed. When the fuel enters the blade chamber, the spinning blade forces the fuel towards the pump’s outlet with great pressure. Turbine pumps are used in various applications to transfer hot fuel from one point to another. They offer high efficiency and reliability, so they are used to supply fuel in gasoline and other fuel engines. However, these pumps are sensitive to fuel contamination.

Gerotor pump

It is a gear drive pump which consists of two gears; a smaller gear and a larger outer gear. When the gears start rotating, they create a vacuum which draws the fuel into the pump. They also create contraction which pressurizes the fuel to move out of the pump. Gerotor pump is used by auto makers’ like- Chrysler and Ford in their vehicles which involve multi port fuel injection system. This type of pump is used in transferring hydraulic fluid, lube oil and light fuel oils.

Solenoid pumps

Solenoid pumps are mostly used to transfer fuel from the vehicle’s fuel tank to its engine. The pump consists of an electromagnetic coil and a piston; there is no motor or blade used in it. Solenoid pumps are manufactured as per requirement with different pressure ranges. The pumps are long lasting and durable as they do not contain bellows or rubber parts.

Peripheral pumps

Peripheral pumps are used to transfer fuel from motor vehicle’s fuel tank to the vehicle’s internal combustion engine. Its internal structure consists of a fuel delivery duct, a fuel intake duct and rotor blade.

Brush-less pumps

Brush less pumps consist of a three phase motor which is completely brushless. Brush-less pumps can easily work with gerotor and turbine pumping sections. They can be used to transfer or pump bio diesel fuel, pump diesel, gasoline-ethanol blend, automotive gasoline, etc. The pumps offer reduced power consumption, durability, high efficiency, and compatibility with wide range if harsh fuels.

According to confirmed reports, using Brushless fuel pumps reduces the power consumption by 36 per cent. This can help auto makers in reduction of CO2 emissions and also help in offering fuel economy improvement in vehicles.
